In Lagoa, in the Algarve hinterland, an old quinta has just been completely transformed. Casa Dima is a project by two Portuguese studios, StudioArte and Concepto-Studio, who have reinvented traditional architecture without ever betraying its essence. They have turned this old building, which looks unremarkable from the street, into a renovated white house with a pool and contemporary decor. This approach is reminiscent of what design studios in Mérida, Mexico, do: they preserve the historic street-facing facades while creating contemporary interiors at the back of the houses, retaining the elements of interest.
We push open the door. The space opens onto a generously sized living room, where carefully selected works of art stand out against the textured walls. The interior functions as a private gallery. Its sleekly designed furniture interacts with the light from the Atlantic, filtered through high-performance glazing. Because the house places ecology at the heart of every design choice: natural insulation, sustainable materials, and a bioclimatic approach.
The kitchen has a very contemporary look with its dark wood cabinetry and sleek lines. Its light stone countertops contrast with the dark cabinet fronts. This room opens directly onto the outdoor dining area and the pool through its French doors.
The rooftop terrace is likely what sets Casa Dima apart the most. A bar is set up there under a pergola, offering views of the rooftops of Lagoa and the surrounding hills. From this rooftop, one can also see the garden and the pool below.
Downstairs, the saltwater pool extends the living space outdoors. An essential feature in a southern country, even in a region cooled by the proximity of the ocean. The coping made of local stone serves as an interface between the architecture and the garden. Teak lounge chairs are arranged facing the setting sun.
StudioArte worked with a mix of materials to be as environmentally conscious as possible, and this is evident in every detail of Casa Dima.
