Located in the picturesque and popular Cotswolds region of England, in the village of Stow-on-the-Wold, is this charming 56sqm apartment. Perfect for two people, it also features a terrace. It has a bedroom, a small, well-designed kitchen, a bathroom worthy of a boutique-hotel, and a living room decorated in an English cottage style that suits it perfectly. It has just the right amount of space, thoughtfully laid out.

A living room with cottage charm and its vintage Marshall radio

The living room isn’t huge, which seems normal for an apartment like this one. Especially since the advertised 56 square meters includes the terrace area. The design choices here are simple, with furniture suited to the room’s size: upholstered armchairs, a coffee table, and a medium-sized sofa.

It’s the textures that make the difference in terms of decor, with the use of patterned fabrics, weathered wood, and carefully chosen objects. It’s a classic look that English interiors master very well by layering elements without overloading the space. One might be tempted to see this as organized clutter. That’s far from the case, it’s very deliberate.

It feels like stepping into a Jane Austen novel... On the rattan desk sits a vintage Marshall radio (which isn’t very “Jane Austen,” though).

The small kitchen is sufficient for a few days, as this is primarily a place for weekends and vacations. It serves its purpose, allowing you to have breakfast or whip up a quick meal. It’s so small that it makes sense to go out for dinner at the local pub and enjoy a true British tradition.

The bedroom also follows the apartment’s decorative style, very English, with its pale green color. Its bed looks incredibly comfortable, you just want to curl up in it.

The bathroom with its claw-foot tub and rain shower

This is also an important room in this charming 56sqm apartment. The claw-foot tub gives it a Victorian feel. Space is both functional and full of personality. The rain shower completes the room’s amenities.

Penny Morrison, Matilda Goad, quintessentially British brands for the furniture

The apartment’s owners turned to two British suppliers for the furniture: Penny Morrison and Matilda Goad. These two names are unknown outside but famous throughout the United Kingdom.

Penny Morrison is a London-based interior designer and fabric designer. Her collections feature botanical patterns, earthy colors, and textures from a bygone era. Her pieces complement each other perfectly. Matilda Goad, meanwhile, has built her reputation on decorative objects that are both pop and nostalgic. Her collection includes enameled bowls, trays with geometric patterns, and original, beautiful accessories.

The result in this apartment is a slightly nostalgic cottage atmosphere, yet with contemporary comfort.

Oak flooring to tie the spaces together

The solid oak flooring complements the rest of the decor perfectly. Here, the coldness of tile was avoided, and the icing on the cake is that it’s heated. The wood provides not only visual warmth but also actual warmth during cooler seasons.

The decor pays homage to local craftsmanship

Much of the decor comes from local artisans. The frames on the walls, the vintage pieces, and even the bath products in the bathroom are made in the region. This commitment to the local community aligns with the needs and desires of today’s travelers.

Our (positive) decor verdict

This charming 56sqm apartment exudes a quintessentially English charm. It offers everything you’d expect, with soft tones, vintage-inspired elements, and comfortable furnishings. It’s a successful blend of classic chic and contemporary style.

The terrace is a real asset. The view of the limestone rooftops of Stow-on-the-Wold and the English sky has a special appeal. As does enjoying the golden late-afternoon light that the Cotswolds generously bestow in every season.

The Cotswolds, a region still little known except to those in the know

People who don’t live in England know Bath and Oxford by reputation. But Stow-on-the-Wold remains a well-kept secret. This medieval village, perched 240 meters above sea level in Gloucestershire, nevertheless offers everything one comes to the Cotswolds for its honey-colored limestone houses, its cobblestone streets, and its pubs where time has stood still somewhere between 1850 and today. Blenheim Palace is 33 kilometers away. The Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon is just as close.
