A Welsh home by a ceramicist-architect duo available to rent on Airbnb
Ty Clai, a Welsh home, charms with its slate fireplace and handmade ceramics. An Airbnb listing by Emma and Luke Flynn
Located in Fishguard, a coastal town in Pembrokeshire, this Welsh home, named Ty Clai, was created by converting a former shop. Behind the ordinary facade on a shopping street lies an interior designed from top to bottom by its owners. The couple (she is an architect and ceramicist, and he is an architect) left London to settle in Wales with their young children.
Ty Clai is, first and foremost, a family story. The couple knows the region well, where they have deep roots. They set their sights on an abandoned former photo shop, topped by a dilapidated upper floor. The previous owner had started renovation work but never finished it. Walls were gouged out, stairs needed rebuilding, everything had to be rebuilt from scratch. The couple tackled the project with the rigor of professionals and the eye of artists. It is this dual perspective, architecture and craftsmanship, that gives Ty Clai its unique character.
The result is a home that blends vintage decor with Welsh craftsmanship. Mouse-gray painted wood floors contrast with whitewashed stone walls. Bright green vintage dining chairs surround a large table made of raw wood. Color is added in subtle yet effective touches.
A massive slate fireplace adorns the living room. Surrounding it, weathered leather armchairs and Welsh wool throws welcome the residents. On the walls, landscape watercolors found at local auctions have been hung. On the mantelpiece, tall vases and objects, all crafted in the adjoining workshop, catch the eye. In the kitchen cabinets, you’ll find handmade mugs by Emma.
In the kitchen, cabinets line a stone wall. Two benches built into bay windows face the main street. This is the former window display of the photo shop, and a beautiful way to make use of this unique feature.
With their high ceilings, the three bedrooms upstairs exude serenity. The exposed stone walls have been left rough, just as they were originally. In the bathroom, a copper bathtub is the focal point of the room.
Ty Clai means “clay house” in Welsh. The pottery studio is part of the property. Guests can book a four-hour workshop on-site. The pieces created are glazed, fired, and then shipped directly. And what better way to cherish a stay than with a souvenir made with your own hands? The icing on the cake is that the sea is just a ten-minute walk away.
