IKEA is making a big splash with its tenth PS collection, and we’ve highlighted a few standout pieces from it in this article. First launched in 1995 under the banner of Democratic Design, the series returns in 2026 with a clear promise: simple, useful, and genuinely joyful objects. Although the themes of the IKEA PS collections have varied over the years, two things remain constant: its Scandinavian roots and a love of simplicity.
The PS line has been around since 1995. It is the most experimental in the IKEA catalog, where designers work without a safety net, free from the constraints of standard furniture. Each edition has produced its own cult pieces: the colorful metal cabinets from 1999, the space capsule-style ceiling lamp from 2014. They all share the same principle: useful first, surprising always—all at an affordable price.
Twelve designers worked on this collection. What they have in common: exploring playful functionality and reinterpreting Nordic aesthetics, each in their own way. Maria O’Brian, Creative Director of IKEA of Sweden, sums up the spirit of the collection: the objects invite you to touch, discover, and play.
Some functions are immediately apparent. The rocking bench starts moving as soon as you sit on it. Others require exploration. A height-adjustable pine stool, featuring a large serrated lever, immediately makes you want to pull it to see what happens. A chair with simple shapes lends itself to several postures: sitting upright, sideways, or almost lying down. An alarm clock inspired by the 1995 PS model takes the shape of a periscope tube.
