Méribel, the front side: legendary slopes, one of Europe’s largest ski areas. But also resort architecture that often looks just like everywhere else. On the other hand, for the past few weeks, a mountain chalet has emerged whose interior is a radical departure from what we usually see. Developed by Alpine Lodges within the Falcon resort, it is decorated far from the usual mountain clichés. With a surface area of 479sqm spread across no fewer than five levels, it features a decorative approach that deserves a closer look.

A material that does all the work

The signature of Chalet J lies in a single material: marbled Bordeaux stone. A stone with light veins on a brown-red background, which we aren’t used to seeing in this type of home. It is used for the kitchen backsplash against a backdrop of matte black cabinetry, as a fireplace surround in the living room, and as a backdrop for the bookshelf in the TV corner.

It’s a bold choice. Red marble is a heavy, rich material typically associated with luxury hotels or classic interiors. Pairing it with raw mountain wood and contemporary furniture creates an interior that stands out from the ordinary. This marble is paired with a palette of slate blue, ochre, wine red, and forest green.

The living room, a spacious living area

The large living room occupies the heart of the chalet. With exposed larch beams, a skylight, a cathedral ceiling on one side, and a low ceiling on the other, the room plays with different levels. Three natural linen sofas fill the space around a smoked glass coffee table with burgundy lacquered legs, accompanied by a cherry-red side table whose tones echo the marble.

The dining area extends from the living room. Here, one notices the solid wood oval table, bottle-green velvet chairs, and amber glass pendant lights with gold frames. Green and gold in an Alpine chalet is an almost sensible choice. The combination is less expected than the ubiquitous natural-beige-white palette found in most luxury rentals in the region.

Each bedroom has its own personality

Four bedrooms, four distinct atmospheres. Alpine Lodges has paired each room with a different panoramic wallpaper. Highlights include a pink-and-gold marbled watercolor in the master suite, a flock of orange birds in another, and snow-covered fir trees drawn in ink in the children’s room. The master suite combines antique larch paneling, a cream-and-gold geometric-patterned upholstered headboard, and bronze-tinted glass pendant lights. Its marbled wallpaper prevents the space from feeling too staid.

A basement that surpasses many luxury spas

The wellness level is one of the most successful spaces in this mountain chalet. The heated indoor pool, clad in blue-green stone, sits alongside walls of weathered old wood and a light-colored stone floor. Indirect lighting at floor level casts a soft, diffused glow.

A bar area with a high table and natural oak chairs completes the space, it’s understated enough not to steal the spotlight. This level also features a sauna, a hot tub, and a built-in audio system. Everything you need to unwind after a good day spent in the cold and snow (or even if it’s hot and summer).

What Planète déco takes away from this mountain chalet

Alpine Lodges claims to break with traditional Alpine decorative codes. The director of the Design Division, Claudine Perrot, calls it a “flagship of a new era in interior design.” That might be a bit of an exaggeration for some. But this mountain chalet proves that you can move beyond the whitewashed wood-linen-fur aesthetic without falling into kitsch or cold design.

What works here is consistency. The burgundy red of the marble reappears in the coffee tables, the candlesticks, and the cushions. Slate blue appears in the TV cabinet and on some headboards. This isn’t a collection of good ideas thrown together at random. It’s the work of true professionals, and it’s immediately apparent.
