This 37sqm tiny house offers the same level of comfort as an apartment
This mini home, a 37sqm tiny house, is entirely on one level with its full kitchen and adult bedroom without a loft
This Miami 27sqm tiny house (400sqf) was designed by Phoenix Building Solutions, and its main advantage is that it’s all on one level. If you’re someone who doesn’t like having to sleep on a mezzanine or use uncomfortable ladders to get into bed, this is the perfect home for you.
It’s the latest model from Phoenix Building Solutions, taking a completely different approach from the usual logic of tiny houses. Instead of trying to pack as many features as possible into the smallest possible space, its layout is entirely horizontal. The result is an interior that resembles a cozy little apartment.
The Miami is what’s known as a “park model.” This is a house on a four-axle trailer, designed to be set up in one place and stay put, or almost (though it remains mobile if necessary). It’s 10.45 meters long (34.3 ft) and, most importantly, over 3.60 meters wide (11.8 ft). It’s this extra width that makes all the difference.
Most tiny houses on wheels are limited to standard transport dimensions to travel freely on the roads. Here, we exceed that threshold, which requires a special permit for towing, but it gives the interior a sense of space that is almost never found in this type of structure. On the facade, board-and-batten siding is paired with a metal roof. Double glass doors open directly onto the kitchen. It’s a bright entryway, as is often seen in this type of small home.
The kitchen in the Miami is truly spacious. Two stainless steel sinks, a cooktop with oven, a microwave, a dishwasher, and a fridge-freezer. There’s also plenty of storage, and a central island that doubles as a table for two. In most tiny houses on the market, the kitchen is much smaller. And people make do with a mini bar placed in front of a window for eating meals. The island, in particular, is a smart design choice. It provides a real work surface and creates a natural separation from the adjoining living room.
Its walls and ceilings are wood paneled, and its floor is vinyl. The atmosphere is warm and very North American. The living area features a sofa, an electric fireplace, and space for a TV. A ceiling fan and a mini-split air conditioning system regulate the temperature. It’s functional and clean, with a cohesive design. It also has numerous enclosed spaces, a slight departure from what we usually see in the tiny house sector.
The bathroom is quite well-equipped with its two sinks and walk-in shower featuring a built-in bench. You can tell it was designed with different generations in mind, including seniors. The washer-dryer combo is there too. Everything fits into a compact space, yet the list of amenities is anything but modest.
The bedroom is accessible at ground level, with normal ceiling height. It’s a well-appointed room with a double bed, two built-in closets, and an armchair. You can get dressed standing up and reach into the closet without contorting yourself.
People with mobility issues or who have simply given up on the idea of tiny houses because of inaccessible lofts and cramped spaces will find a model here that speaks directly to them.
The 37sqm tiny house Miami is currently listed for $96,526 (excluding shipping costs) on the Tiny House Listings platform. This price point places this model at the high end of the tiny house market, but the features justify the cost.
At this price point, we’re no longer really talking about affordable alternative housing: it is a comfortable second home, a pied-à-terre on private land, or a permanent housing solution for those who have chosen hyper-localization over mobility.
Phoenix Building Solutions manufactures several other models, but the Miami is the one that takes the idea that a tiny house can function as a comfortable apartment the furthest.
The Miami is one of those rare tiny houses that you could consider as a primary residence without feeling like you’re making sacrifices. The double sink and fully equipped kitchen are details that make a difference in daily life.
Its price, however, exceeds $90,000 excluding delivery a standard price in the U.S., but one that may seem excessive in the rest of the world. It is, however, in line with the North American market
