An 87sqm apartment with contemporary decor for a young couple
This 87sqm apartment for a young couple features a warm minimalist interior thanks to walnut veneers and quartzite
The young couple who own this 87sqm apartment simply wanted to live surrounded by authentic materials. For this project, they entrusted the design of their spacious new three-room apartment to architect Maria Rodionovskaya of the ON Plane firm. She translated this wish into an interior that is both understated and deeply welcoming, a warm, minimalist environment.
The apartment boasts a breathtaking view that inspired the designer, who opted for warm, natural tones. All the rooms feature touches of wood, and the colors flow gently from one room to the next in a cohesive manner.
It’s a deliberate choice. Most minimalist interiors fall into the trap of clinical coldness. Here, the natural tones are complemented by natural materials, wood, stone, and ceramics, and the whole creates a beautiful balance. It’s a refined yet comforting atmosphere.
The kitchen occupies a space predetermined by the developer from the outset. But because it was small, it didn’t open up well to the rest of the home. Architects solved the problem by expanding it toward the loggia, which allowed for the integration of a dining area. The separation from the living room is achieved via a sliding glass partition, which can be opened or closed as needed. It’s a highly functional solution, far more flexible than a traditional door. Thus, it serves as both an open and a closed kitchen.
Almost all the furniture comes from the woodworking shop that collaborates with the firm. The fronts of the upper cabinets feature transparent textured glass, discreet yet elegant. The room’s standout feature is the quartzite countertop, a stone sourced from a specialty supplier. Its mottled texture, with golden and ochre hues, contrasts beautifully with the walnut veneer surfaces. This combination gives the kitchen its character.
The living room features warm earth and sand tones, both reassuring and welcoming. Panoramic windows surround it on nearly all sides. This unique layout, which ensures maximum light, does, however, impose certain choices. You cannot cover all the walls, there simply aren’t enough of them. The chosen solution concentrates all electronics and storage on the single available wall section. A system of open shelves integrated into this single unit serves a dual purpose: displaying objects and concealing a load-bearing column.
The ceiling in the TV area features a suspended wooden panel, crafted in the same workshop. This touch creates a two-level ceiling that visually structures the space without lowering the ceiling height.
The bedroom presents a classic problem found in apartments with irregular layouts, as it has no right angles. In such cases, it is difficult to fit standard furniture.
The solution, of course, lies in custom-made pieces. Decorative wall panels, some covered in warm fabric, others enhanced with subtle backlighting, visually correct the angles. Mirrors enlarge the space and alter the perception of the room. And wood veneer reappears here, the project’s unifying theme, to soften the overall atmosphere.
The massive built-in wardrobe curves in a semicircle against one wall. This unexpected curve is another unique feature, difficult to achieve with off-the-shelf furniture.
The room currently used as an office will become a children’s bedroom. In the meantime, it houses a “floating” desk facing the large panoramic window. The desktop runs from wall to wall, supported by a metal frame covered in veneer. From the outside, it simply looks like a floating plank. Inside, the structure is solid and perfectly concealed. It is a sleek element crafted with great care.
Both bathrooms feature travertine-effect tiles, which are matte and warm. Walnut is used in the custom-made furniture, including a tall cabinet in the guest bathroom that reaches all the way to the ceiling. This type of cabinet allows for the storage of a large volume of essential bathroom items while maintaining its aesthetic appeal.
The main bathroom features a bathtub, a request from the owners. Its large-format stoneware tiles laid with narrow grout lines avoid the “mosaic” effect that quickly looks dated. The overall design stays within the same natural color palette as the rest of the apartment.
This well-executed project achieves total harmony between the design choices and the practical constraints of the space. Natural materials, light, and textures come together in every room to create a place where you feel at ease, sheltered from the city yet still overlooking it. You immediately understand the architect’s vision, and you can sense that the residents will live comfortably here even as the family grows.

A color palette inspired by nature
The apartment boasts a breathtaking view that inspired the designer, who opted for warm, natural tones. All the rooms feature touches of wood, and the colors flow gently from one room to the next in a cohesive manner.
It’s a deliberate choice. Most minimalist interiors fall into the trap of clinical coldness. Here, the natural tones are complemented by natural materials, wood, stone, and ceramics, and the whole creates a beautiful balance. It’s a refined yet comforting atmosphere.
The fully custom-designed kitchen
The kitchen occupies a space predetermined by the developer from the outset. But because it was small, it didn’t open up well to the rest of the home. The living room with maximum light

The bathroom with stone as the star
Both bathrooms feature travertine-effect tiles, which are matte and warm.
