160 kilometers from Los Angeles, the San Jacinto Mountains are a place where nature enchants you. Idyllwild, a small mountain town nestled along the Pacific Crest Trail, embodies all that California does best. Ponderosa pines tower over the sky with their giant silhouettes. Granite boulders rise from the ground as if placed there by a mischievous giant. And in the midst of this almost surreal setting, a wooden and stone house comes into view around a bend in the path.

This wooden house, available on Airbnb, is unlike any other. Textile designer Heather Taylor, founder of the brand Heather Taylor Home, has completely reimagined it. Here, she brings her personal and harmonious vision to life. You’ll find Vichy check in every room, along with throws and vintage furniture. The cottagecore style finds its most beautiful expression here.

Cottagecore-style interior design

Starting in the living room, Heather Taylor chose to upholster nearly all the seating in the same caramel-and-white Vichy check. It adorns the generous sofas, the rounded armchairs, and the ottomans. The effect is balanced despite this very prominent print. The key to this success lies in the skillfully balanced contrasts.

Its raw wood ceiling with exposed beams, the white-painted brick fireplace, and the large spherical white paper light fixture act as elegant mediators, blending rustic charm with textile sophistication. A built-in bench under the windows, adorned with green checkered cushions, provides a spot to stretch out and read or take a nap.

The dining room and kitchen

In the dining room, the designer has placed a long light-wood table surrounded by black lacquered Thonet chairs. They are topped with green Vichy-check seat cushions held in place by small bows. The combination of black bistro chairs and green Vichy check against a backdrop of white brick and wood paneling immediately evokes Parisian brasseries transplanted into the forest. A cylindrical fabric lamp printed with floral motifs completes the scene.

The kitchen retains its old-world charm. The solid pine cabinets, black wrought-iron handles, and sage-green tile backsplash create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Its white ceramic sink sits on a gray soapstone countertop and is fitted with gold-toned brass faucets, a very vintage-chic choice. The ochre-checkered curtains on the windows echo the home’s textile theme.

Bedrooms

The master bedroom features a deep red that’s everywhere. It has a turned-wood headboard painted bright red, a red-and-white Vichy check bedspread accented with petal-pink ruffled pillowcases. Wallpaper with subtle patterns on a cream background covers the walls. The bedside lamp with a pleated pink fabric shade adds a touch of girly whimsy. You either love or hate this kind of room at first glance. But for those seeking a rustic style, sleeping here is a true delight.

The children’s bedroom features the same red turned-wood beds, the same Vichy checkered sheets, and identical wallpaper. Two single beds face each other in this bright room with large panoramic windows overlooking the pine trees. The third bedroom takes a different approach. Here, everything is pine green. The green gingham is everywhere, on the comforter, the pillows, and the curtains. A salmon-colored wallpaper with micro-patterns in the background creates a serene retreat. This color choice is directly inspired by the surrounding nature.

Bathrooms

The bathrooms have the same charm as the rest of the house. The midnight blue hexagonal floor tiles with white stars create an immediate visual impact, balanced by white brick-style metro tiles in the shower or bathtub area. Its solid wood vanity units in warm tones complement the pine paneling that lines the walls.

The glass-walled living room, a living space in its own right

The glass-walled living room is perhaps the most spectacular success of this renovation. Heather Taylor has furnished it with a collection of rattan and bamboo furniture lacquered in bright red, a bold hue that contrasts sharply with the surrounding forest. A rocking chair, a red pedestal table, and caramel-colored Vichy-print ottomans invite you to settle in for hours.

Why this wooden house reminds us of France

Something about this Californian wooden house reminds us of France. Vichy check, a popular fabric in France since the 19th century, and particularly in the 1960s, adorns the entire interior of the house. The French are very familiar with this checkered cotton fabric, long associated with kitchen aprons and guinguette tablecloths, but also with the iconic Brigitte Bardot.

Here, Heather Taylor makes it the central motif of her decor. She draws direct inspiration from Provençal fabrics and the French linen collections she loves. The brasserie-style dining room, the French-style farmhouse sink, and the pine cabinets reminiscent of family homes in our region all contribute to making this North American wooden house speak a deeply Francophile decorative dialect.

Our take on this wooden house

Heather Taylor has achieved something rare here with a decor scheme that could easily have become overwhelming but ultimately remains light and cheerful. The ever-present Vichy check never grows tiresome because it varies in color and pattern from room to room. The color choices, red, pine green, and caramel, draw on the site’s natural palette.

Idyllwild, the California mountain town beloved by Los Angeles residents

Idyllwild is anything but an ordinary vacation spot. This village of 3,500 people, perched at an altitude of 1,700 meters, attracts Los Angeles residents in search of fresh air, hikes, and beautiful starry nights. The Pacific Crest Trail passes through here, connecting vast desert expanses to coniferous forests.

You can climb the granite rocks first thing in the morning, explore nearby Hemet Lake, and stroll through the village’s art galleries in the afternoon. The region also offers milder temperatures than Los Angeles, even in summer, making it a perfect weekend getaway.
