A 19th-century Catalan village house straight out of a dream
Terracotta floors, cedar beams, vaulted cellar: Casa Maltesa is a 19th-century Catalan village house restored by designers
In the wine-growing village of Sant Cugat Sesgarrigues, forty minutes from Barcelona, a 19th-century Catalan village house has been renovated by designers. Behind its classic façade, Casa Maltesa hides an interior with rustic-chic decor and a sunny patio.
The house’s name comes from a hand-carved ornament. On the second flight of the interior staircase, a small grille in the shape of a Maltese cross is carved into the wood. This motif, carried across the Mediterranean by the Knights Hospitaller as early as the 12th century, still adorns facades from Sicily to Catalonia. Here, it lends its name to the entire home: Casa Maltesa.
On the ground floor, hand-fired terracotta tiles set the tone for the home’s decor. This type of artisanal flooring has always been rooted in Catalan tradition, and its warm hues contrasting with the white walls are also traditional. Cedar beams run across the ceilings, evoking the home’s artisanal origins.
The kitchen is bathed in light. Its white walls, simple furnishings, and natural materials create a space where cooking becomes a pleasure in itself. The countertop, the soft sea-green tiles, and the tableware visible on the open shelves give a feel that is both rustic and modern.
In the living room, the furniture is more contemporary. It nestles around a black steel stove, almost minimalist, and sufficient to warm the house during the cooler months. Soft materials and a few carefully chosen objects create an atmosphere that is both rustic and refined.
The three bedrooms upstairs follow the same design philosophy. Rustic style has been modernized with simplicity. The white walls highlight an antique wardrobe, but the bed is simple. The retro-style bathroom is bright and charming.
The patio at the back of the house basks in the Catalan sun. It features an outdoor dining area and seating for relaxing. This house has preserved the soul of its vernacular architecture thanks to its careful renovation.
