Nestled between the Serra de Tramuntana mountains and the sea, and for decades accessible only by a vintage train winding its way from Palma, the small town of Sóller has retained a unique atmosphere. The honey-colored limestone facades, the wooden shutters painted in faded tones, the orange trees spilling onto the narrow streets, everything here gives the impression that time has stood still. It is precisely in this setting that the team at Berrow Projects presents us Sa Casona, a renovated large historic townhouse in Mallorca.

A charming, preserved facade

The house features a rough-hewn stone facade, wooden shutters in two shades, some in a warm brown, others in a powdery blue-gray facing the inner courtyard, and a rectangular pool with turquoise reflections. Fuchsia bougainvilleas burst forth on the left side. In the background, the contours of the Tramuntana mountains are visible.

The exterior architecture remains faithful to the island’s traditional style. Berrow Projects does not seek to surprise from the outside. The house blends into its surroundings with discretion.

The entryway and living room

You push open the door and find yourself facing the staircase. The wrought-iron banister, with its antique scrollwork painted in a weathered gray-green, winds around a two-story stairwell. Amber and gold glass spheres hang from the ceiling, suspended by thin wires. It is a light installation that is as much a sculpture as it is a chandelier.

Viewed from above the staircase, the main room reveals its layout. A very low, modular sofa in pearl gray fabric occupies the center. Beneath it, a kilim in saturated colors, red, orange, blue, and green, brings warmth to the space. The built-in bookshelf in the white wall, with its dark shelves, books, and graphic posters leaning against the back, creates a cozy reading nook.

This contrast between the white of the lime-washed walls, the dark wood of the exposed beams, and the vibrancy of the kilim forms the decorative DNA of the entire house. It can be found in every room, interpreted in different ways.

The dining room and its farmhouse table

The dining room, featuring a large table made of reclaimed wood, is located in a rather narrow room with a high ceiling. It is surrounded by chairs with black legs and seats made of woven rush. A bench runs along the opposite wall, upholstered with plum and caramel-colored linen cushions. Two brushed brass pendant lights, conical and slightly asymmetrical in shape, hang from the ceiling. The French door at the back opens directly onto the cool greenery of the garden and the pool. It lets light flood into the room;

A contrasting designer kitchen

The kitchen stands out in this rustic-chic setting. The upper and lower cabinets are entirely made of very dark brown lacquered metal, almost black. A generous central island is entirely clad in veined gray marble, including the sides. It is a bold and successful design choice.

The understated bedrooms

The bedroom we discover here demonstrates the attention to detail. Its original cement tile floor, featuring floral patterns in shades of beige, ochre, and gray, has been preserved. Exposed beams run along the ceiling. A wooden window opens onto the garden, letting in the greenery of the trees. Above the bed, a painting in a gilded frame depicts a snowy landscape, an unexpected choice in a Mediterranean setting. The natural linen bedding, slightly crinkled and in shades of white and beige, evokes a sense of softness and freshness.

Main bathroom

The main bathroom is both contemporary and classic. The suspended vanity unit in dark-grained wood is paired with a light granite countertop. Faucets and fixtures are in matte brass, discreet and warm. The shower is set within a white plaster arch with a Moorish feel. On the floor, antique tiles with gray and white patterns surround the freestanding, white, oval bathtub.

The garden, a Mediterranean patio designed as a living space

The central patio, paved with irregular white limestone stones, unfolds beneath a wisteria whose branches form a natural green canopy. Plastered concrete benches, adorned with terracotta cushions, run along the walls. A solid wood table and woven resin chairs complete the ensemble. Conical woven straw pendant lights hang against the rough-hewn stone wall on the outdoor dining area side and illuminate this outdoor dining space come evening. It is a very simple outdoor decor where nothing is superfluous. Further on, the garden slopes down in terraces toward the pool, punctuated by stone slabs set into the lawn and framed by wisteria, orange trees, and Mediterranean shrubs.

Our take on the design choices

Berrow Projects has achieved something quite difficult: giving an old house a contemporary interior without stripping it of its soul. The kilim, serving as a recurring pop of color in several rooms, acts as a clever unifying element. The preserved beams, antique tiles, and wooden frames evoke the home’s historic essence. Its dark kitchen, marble, and brass pendant lights bring a modern touch.

The snowy landscape painting in the Mediterranean-style bedroom is a deliberately offbeat touch that takes some getting used to... It’s not necessarily the kind of wall art one would have chosen.
