This renovated trullo in Puglia is Trullo Falco. Perched in the hamlet of Laureto between Fasano and Locorotondo, it still features its distinctive white limestone domes. Nestled among centuries-old olive trees, it reflects the southern light off its white walls and the water of the pool.

A well-balanced Mediterranean simplicity inside

The living room and dining room occupy the heart of the trullo, where the limestone vaults rise. The sofa is spacious, made of natural linen, and the solid wood dining table enhances the rustic feel of the space. Light fixtures crafted in local workshops cast a warm glow that highlights the stone’s texture. The dining room opens directly onto the kitchen, featuring a modern take on country style, making it a pleasant place to cook.

Three bedrooms are available in this renovated trullo in Puglia, each with its own private bathroom. Their interior design focuses on the quality of materials rather than an accumulation of objects.

White dominates, it is the ideal color for trulli, the color of whitewashed walls, the color of a summer in Puglia. The furniture is understated, as the goal is to keep the architecture front and center.

Terraces, pool, and southern light

The pool occupies a central position on the property. It faces due south, looking out toward the hills and olive groves that slope down toward Fasano. From the covered terrace, the view takes in a rural landscape that has changed little over the past two centuries.

The exteriors deserve as much attention as the interior. Seating areas are scattered among fig, cherry, and citrus trees. Terraces on different levels catch the light at different times of day. A main panoramic terrace features an outdoor kitchen, designed for late-night dinners under the stars. A stone island, an induction cooktop, a wood-fired pizza oven, a barbecue. It is a true living space designed for cooking outdoors, facing the olive trees, until nightfall.

A trullo, a story of dry stone

The trullo is a form of dwelling unique in the world. First appearing in the Itria Valley around the 14th century, it is recognizable by its conical roof formed of limestone slabs stacked dry, without mortar. A rustic building technique whose logic has stood the test of time: the thick walls keep the interior cool in summer and store heat in winter. It is a perfect example of authentic, understated vernacular architecture.

Alberobello, twenty minutes away, features the most spectacular examples, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. But the magic really happens far from the tourist buses, in these quiet hamlets where trulli appear around the bend of a dirt road, surrounded by vineyards and fig trees. Laureto is one of these places spared from the crowds, where you can savor the Italian Dolce Vita.

What the renovation has preserved

Trullo Falco has not undergone renovation in the conventional sense, without excessive modernization. Its owner has preserved the original cones, the exposed stone walls, and the vaulted spaces that give the rooms their unique character. A contemporary extension has been added to increase the living space. But it blends seamlessly with the original architecture.

Many trulli renovated for vacation rentals veer into forced quaintness, with trompe-l’œil pottery and checkered tablecloths. Here, the stone is allowed to speak for itself, and it stands on its own. Local artisans worked using traditional techniques, and the result feels authentic.

The Itria Valley is just a short drive away

Locorotondo is just a few minutes away. Its historic center is surrounded by flat-roofed houses, its narrow, stair-like streets, and its wine bars where you can order a glass of Verdeca or Bianco di Locorotondo IGP while watching the cats go by. Cisternino and its butcher-grills, another local institution. Ostuni, the “white city,” is half an hour away. The Adriatic coast is fifteen minutes away. Trullo Falco’s location is a real geographical asset.

What stands out about the design choices

Trullo Falco’s design philosophy is clear: authentic materials, understated furnishings, and generous outdoor spaces. It’s an honest approach. The goal isn’t to create a “magazine-worthy” space, it’s to live comfortably in an old building.

What we wholeheartedly approve of: the preservation of the original volumes, the quality of the exposed stone, and the outdoor kitchen made of cut stone that formally echoes the trullo’s walls. What we’d look at more closely: the storage spaces in the bedrooms, often an afterthought in this type of renovation, and the consistency of the fabric choices across the different rooms.

But that’s nitpicking. The essentials are all there, and this renovated trullo in Puglia is one of those rare homes where the architecture alone carries the project.
